10 reasons to visit our friendly neighbour, Malacca [Feb. 2nd, 2007|02:57 pm]
1. It’s only a 3-hour drive up the North-South Highway. Official limit is 110km/hr. Where on earth in Singapore can you find this kinda speed limit, ah?

2. Our friend has access to rent rooms in DBS-affiliated heritage bungalow, near to Jonker St. It’s only, gasp, SGD30 for a room for 3D2N!

3. Alternatively, we recommend you stay at the pretty quaint Puri Hotel in Jonker Street. Retail room rate is SGD75.

4. You can have breakfast comprising chendol, nonya laksa, penang laksa, yam cake that melts in your mouth. I feel like I’m in heaven!!!

5. The seafood! Savour dinner till your drop at Seafood Terrance amidst the sea breeze and good company.

6. The sunset at Malacca Straits, a view to die for.

7. On weekend nights, walk down memory lane when the night market comes alive at Jonker St.

8. Drink yourself silly at the pubs and listen to the free-lance singers belt out oldies from the Sixties.

9. Shopping at Mahkota Parade and Jusco is great and cheap.
10. If you only have 21 days leave and dun wanna waste it, what better than a short weekend trip to Malacca?

Cyberculture - Are U WHO U R? [Jan. 31st, 2007|10:02 am]
To make the point that it's easy for people to fake identities and fabricate things onlline, my students made up this "blog" about me.

I'm painted as a Japanese athlete competing in the DOHA Asian Games. I met George Bush there, we fell in love, got married and I became First Lady. We even had a honeymoon in Hawaii! What da hell of a story, ain't it?!

I wish I had a way to put up my picture in this blog but it's in bmp and I have no idea how to convert it to jpeg to post it here. So sorry pals, if u wanna see how I look as a Pink ranger or a First Lady wannabe, you'll gonna have to come to my cube ;-)

Saying farewell is hard [Aug. 18th, 2006|03:35 pm]
Today is my last facilitation day this semester. It happens every last week of the semester but sayng farewell is still hard though it's the 4th time I'm doing this now. Boo hoo hooo.

It's especially hard if it's an endearing class. I have 2 such classes this year. W34L and W15K. They are different in characters but both are very "kwai" and will do extra work to surpass what they have done the previous week.

You all rock, classes. Muack muack. All the best to you next semester.

From Bland to Beautiful [Jul. 19th, 2006|09:18 am]
Give a camera, let them loose on the streets of New York and shoot wheatever inspires them to design a costume. This was the assignment given in reality TV show Project Runway.

What keen eyes they've got. Ordinary, common place things like a vase, a red colour, a grafitti and even a gutter of sewate inspired the designers to come up with gems of art.

I think it's the same way with students. Given the due freedom and encouragement to express themselves, they will reward you duly as their imagination fly. I've got some of the best media messages filmed as MTVv during Problem 10 - Be Media Smart. Though the filming was amateurish, the concepts were great.

One showed a student break-dancing in the library with Converse sneakers. Message - Converse makes you wow: you're transformed into a flexible, agile dancer, no longer just a normal RP student. And the library setting means Converse makes you different, you don't things the conventional way (hence you also don't dance in the pub).

Another showed the boy-meets-girl and likes girl story line to showcase Adidas. And the eventual present ended with a Adidas sweater for the girl, showing it's the best present you could ever give anyone - and win her love as a result.

Today, Shaun emailed us a video clip made in Korea, about how the adults were puzzled by a young student who only paints sheets of black on canvas. Parents, school and psychologists all got really worried about his condition. It took a teacher who found jig saw puzzle in his desk drawer to realise that he's a genius who was painting a hug jig saw puzzle of a big black whale!

Too much doubts, insufficient affirmation, results in inconfident students. Sadly, praise is something we don't give enough in our society.

The Art of Persuasion [Jul. 4th, 2006|02:35 pm]
Do lah. Don't want!
Do lah. Nope!
Please? Why should I please u?

How often have we encountered rejections when we need a favour? Apply for a job? Cajoled students to have an interest (or at least pretend to) in the topic we're teaching?

Thus Problem 9, Communicating Persuasively, could not have come at a more opportune time.

When I tried to deliver this lesson in class, what I found worked really well was giving evaluating teams the power to "veto" a letter which they found non-persuasive and denied a meeting opportunity to the writer. And students LOVE POWER!! Yes, tension rose, some aggressive words were exchanged, there was some uneasiness but the evaluators found themselves more analytical as they were forced to grade their classmates' letters. On the other hand, the writer's team had to fought extra hard to find the right words to convince the judging team.

Hence it's a problem which really spiced things up and forced them to think critically of the simple P word. Well written problem, D-san.
